A man has died following a hit-and-run in south Auckland on Wednesday morning.
Police say the incident, which took place on Thomas Rd in Māngere, occurred at about 11:45am. The car involved fled the area immediately after it happened.
The age and identity of the man hit by the vehicle has not yet been revealed. He died at the scene.
About eight people were seen in handcuffs, but police say no one has been arrested yet. However, there are people speaking with them as part of their enquiries.
Police say early reports suggest a firearm may be involved, so as a precaution, armed staff were sent to the area, but no firearm has been found yet.
"A scene examination on Thomas Road is currently underway and is expected to carry on for some time," says acting Detective Inspector Karen Bright of Counties Manukau CIB.
"A post mortem will also be carried out in due course."
She adds police are currently speaking with numerous people at the address.
"Our investigation is still in the early stage and detectives will now work to piece together the full set of circumstances of what has occurred."
Police would like to hear from any witnesses or those who were in the Thomas Rd area at the time. They can call 105 quoting the file number 210609/0607.
Earlier, cordons were in place on Thomas Rd and investigators, including members of the Serious Crash Unit, were examining the scene.
Enquiries are being carried out to establish the model of the vehicle involved, as well as any other details.
