Queen's Birthday weekend is set to be wet and windy as a low moves across New Zealand.
A large high currently moving into the country will clear by the long weekend, but behind it will be a weak low that will bring moisture-rich subtropical airflows.
WeatherWatch says rain in northern New Zealand will be patchy with light drizzly falls for some, but for others, like those in the Bay of Islands, there will be heavier downpours. Some of these heavier downpours will then slowly track eastwards over the upper North Island as we head towards Queen's Birthday Monday.
Some western areas of the South Island are set to get 100-150mm of rain total over the long weekend, with MetService saying there could be a weather warning issued. There may be heavy rain in Fiordland on Saturday too.
But eastern areas, such as Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, and Otago, are set to be the driest. WeatherWatch says there will be a little bit of rain, but not a lot at this stage.
WeatherWatch also forecasts strong winds in various parts throughout the country which may generate warnings too.
The north to northeast flow will keep a few places mild during winter too. This same airflow will bring windy north to northeasterlies between the departing high and incoming low that will blow down across New Zealand this weekend.
