An Auckland man has expressed concern after an "unprovoked" incident in a supermarket carpark this week.

Jayden Bickers says he was looking for a parking space at Pak'n Save Royal Oak on Tuesday when a man suddenly opened his car door.

"In broad daylight he put his whole body practically in my car and demanded that I drive him somewhere for $20."

Bickers says he politely told the unknown man he couldn't help him and asked him to shut the door, at which point things took a turn for the worse.

"I'm like 'no, please close my door' and he just absolutely spins out at me," Bickers told Newshub.

He said the man "went into a rage" and started punching his car.

Bickers says he immediately called the police but was told they were too tied up to send anyone.

"He just disappeared into the carpark, he could have come and attacked anyone and they were telling me I needed to submit an emergency report."

He says although he wasn't scared for his own safety, he was concerned the same thing could happen to someone more vulnerable.

"Imagine if it wasn't me but an elderly person."

After circling around the carpark while on the phone with police to try and find the man, Bickers said he went inside Pak'nSave to talk to security.

He said staff at the supermarket were "brilliant", with a number of people coming out to help search for the man but to no avail.

Police confirmed they received a call on Tuesday regarding "a person behaving aggressively", outside the supermarket and said "the alleged offender left the car park shortly after the call for service was made".

A spokesperson also said a follow-up report was made later in the day and that police "are looking into the matter".

"Police encourage people to contact police immediately on 111 if they are afraid for their safety or for those around them," the spokesperson said.

"If you can't decide if it's a real emergency and you're still worried, call 111 and ask us. We'll help you work out what to do."

Bickers said he is still waiting for a response to the report he submitted to police and was warning others to be on guard in case something similar happens to them.

"Please be careful of this guy," Bickers wrote in a Facebook community group.

"He did this in broad daylight under the cameras while holding all of his food. Unprovoked."
