Residents in south Auckland are beginning to clean-up after a suspected tornado tore through the area on Saturday morning.
One person died as a result of the wild weather, with numerous injuries also reported.
Residents in Papatoetoe reported the area "looks like a warzone", with power lines down, fences knocked over and trees uprooted.
Fire and Emergency assistant area commander of Auckland City Stephen Sosich said there was "significant damage" to residential and commercial properties across three or four blocks in the Cavendish Dr area of south Auckland.
"There's extensive roof damage, a lot of broken glass, a lot of infrastructure has been damaged," Sosich said
MetService said although it will take time until it can confirm the wild weather was a tornado, video footage appears to show it is very likely.
"Our equipment detected one lightning strike in the Auckland area, so the sparks that you can see are likely to be damaged power lines arcing rather than lightning," meteorologist Andrew James said.
