The polar blast has gone but the chilly temperatures are expected to continue through the coming nights across New Zealand.
WeatherWatch's Philip Duncan explains a high is rolling over New Zealand, bringing milder temperatures, clear skies and light winds throughout the day.
However there will be a drop in temperatures overnight as a result.
"The daytime temperatures go up but the nighttime temperatures go down," he says.
Duncan says it won't be until Friday when the high heads east of the country that the temperatures should warm up overnight.
It's expected to be chilly in Auckland on Thursday morning with MetService forecasting temperatures of between 0C - 5C.
However it isn't forecast to be as cold as Wednesday morning which saw Auckland record the coldest temperature in exactly three years.
Waikato is expected to be especially cold, likely the coldest region for overnight lows in the coming days for the North Island.
In the lower North Island a low southerly will brush over the area and there could be a light, early shower which will be "chilly, chilly, chilly", meteorologist Angus Hines says.
The central South Island will see crisp, cool weather with "extensive frost" in Canterbury.
Hines says a low-temperature forecast for Christchurch of -2C "could be optimistic".
"I wouldn't be surprised if over the next couple of days we see some -4C, -5C around Christchurch and for the greater Canterbury area perhaps even cooler -6C, -7C is not off the table."
