Wellington locals are horrified after large amounts of human excrement has been found littering the city's streets.
It came to light after a local named Sora Sanders mentioned the issue in the popular Facebook page Vic-Deals.
Sanders specifically noticed high amounts of excrement on Tory and Manners streets.
"I see stuff like that constantly, I walk to work along Tory St most mornings, and take the route through Courtney [Place] all the way to Lambton [Quay] where I work. It's either piss, shit, vomit, or a gloriously unrecognisable combination of the three."
The post struck a nerve with over 700 likes and 300 comments. And Wellingtonians were quick to agree with the post and share their own stories of finding 'waste' on the streets.
"Witnessed an elderly homeless looking lady at the bus stop just lift her skirt and take a number 2 on the footpath in the bus stop," one commenter wrote.
"Went to town the other week and there was a group of girls shielding their mate taking a shit by the night n day on Courtenay place" said another.
"This place is literally a shit show," one agreed.
The Wellington City Council (WCC) has acknowledged the problem, saying multiple incidents have been reported.
"The reasons why people defecate in public are usually related to intoxication but can also be connected to unmet mental health, intellectual disability or substance abuse needs," a WCC spokesperson told Newshub.
"The support agencies that we work with are involved and doing what they can to offer support to improve outcomes for people who experience this level of unmet need."
For Sanders, more could be done as the commute to work can be overwhelming.
"It's actually hard to avoid the smell on my walk to work. Sometimes it's an overwhelming smell of piss coming from the barred off areas."
WCC says they have a street cleaning contractor [who] cleans the streets of the Golden mile and high profile streets nightly. They also have street orderlies who walk the streets seven days a week.
" When reported through social media or to our contact centre, a reactive team will be there to clean up.
"We also have numerous toilet facilities all around the CBD for the public to access," WWC noted.
