Police have confirmed to Newshub a Westlake Girls High student was targeted on social media by an unknown cyberbully who is making threats about murder and rape.
It comes as students at Albany Senior High School alerted their parent and teachers last week of threats they were receiving from an unknown Snapchat and Instagram user.
"We are treating it seriously and with urgency," Inspector Callum McNeil told Newshub on Wednesday.
Netsafe and police are currently working with the schools to track down the culprits sending the cyber abuse.
Before officials were alerted, Albany High investigated the claims as the accounts were under a current student's name, making him a suspect.
But the school quickly realised it wasn't him or any other pupil, past or present, at the school.
Albany High Principal/Tumuaki Claire Amos confirmed: "The names and photos shared on those accounts of young males are not students at ASHS."
Inspector Callum McNeil said officers were aware there have been males who have been wrongly accused of sending these messages.
"We would ask our community to please leave it to the police to investigate."
Amos explained to the wider community that the issue extends beyond Albany High and have reported all accounts to police and Net safe to investigate further.
Albany High will hold a 'Wellbeing Evening' this week for whānau to explore how they can "further support" the wellbeing of local youth both "offline and online", Amos said.
When Newshub approached Westlake Girls High for comment, a spokesperson was unaware of the social media threats made to students.
This story was amended on June 28 to reflect it was one Westlake student who was targetted and not multiple girls.
