The owner of a Whāngarei bar says the city has taken a violent turn in recent months, prompting a security beef up to prevent staff and patrons from being assaulted.
It comes after a man was killed during a "disorder incident" on Bank St in the city on Saturday night.
Nearby bar The Butter Factory is now taking action.
"As everyone is probably aware, Whangārei was struck with a tragic event on Saturday night outside another popular bar in the CBD," owner Luke Revell said on the bar's Facebook page.
"We would like to extend our condolences to the friends and family of the young man who passed away as well as all those that witnessed the event. We are thinking about you all."
Whangārei's nightlife had "taken a turns in terms of violence", something they were "absolutely sick of", Revell said.
He said additional CCTV cameras are being set up inside and outside the bar, and it's also brought in a scanner nicknamed "Stan" to detect fake IDs.
"Now if you are not caught up in any drama, Stan will forget everything about you. However, if you cause any violence, damage to property, or anything to do with drugs, Stan will remember you, and he will remember you FOREVER.
"This means the next time you try and enter the premise, you will be turned away, and depending on the severity of the offense, it could be for life.
"So this is basically a notice to everyone who comes to late night gigs not to be an a-hole, or else you'll never be welcome back."
Revell said the scanner would only be used on nights deemed "high risk".
It wouldn't be used on people having dinner or a quiet drink at the bar, he said.
