A man has been taken into custody after fleeing police in Auckland on Saturday.

At around 10am this morning, a police officer located a vehicle in Kumeu that was linked to a man being sought by police.

The man was then found at an address in Kumeu, a spokesperson said.

He then fled on foot and stole a vehicle from a nearby property.
Police said the man was monitored by the Eagle helicopter while he was driving through west Auckland towards central Auckland.

"The vehicle came to a stop on the Khyber Pass off-ramp, where the offender attempted to steal a vehicle from a member of the public," police said.

Police officers were quickly on the scene and took the offender into custody with the assistance of a second member of the public.

Police said the Khyber Pass off-ramp would remain closed for some time and motorists were asked to take alternative routes.

No members of the public were injured in the incident.
