A person has died and a police staff member has been hospitalised after a serious crash on an Auckland motorway on Monday morning.
A police spokesperson confirmed emergency services were called at 10:10am to a crash on the Upper Harbour Highway near the Tauhinu Road off ramp at Greenhithe.
One person died at the scene.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster confirmed a police employee was also seriously injured in the crash, which occurred while they were on duty in a speed camera van.
"Our staff member was seriously injured and taken to hospital in a critical condition. He is currently in hospital undergoing surgery.
"Police have notified his family and we are supporting them in every way we can at this devastating time. Our thoughts are with our colleague and his family."
Coster said the incident is "incredibly distressing" for the wider police family.
Police are now establishing the circumstances of the crash but it's believed the speed camera van was parked on the side of the road when it was struck by the other vehicle.
"The driver of the other vehicle has died at the scene, and police are supporting their family and providing support through Victim Support.
"Police remain at the scene and the Serious Crash Unit and Waitematā CIB are investigating the cause of the crash."
