There are more than 5000 bus stops across Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and many are getting new names, Auckland Transport (AT) has announced.
On Wednesday, bus stops across Tāmaki Makaurau and the online journey planner will be updated to reflect nearby landmarks such as schools, parks, churches, tourist locations and hospitals, as well as public transport interchanges and major intersections.
This brings Auckland in line with cities including London, Paris, Madrid and Melbourne which have all adopted name-based stops.
AT made the changes following customer testing in late 2020 and consultation with members of the community who are blind or have low vision.
AT's executive general manager customer experience Vanessa Ellis says the updated bus stop names are a step in the right direction.
AT says this will help with the upcoming roll-out of on-board audio announcements on buses which is due to roll out later this year.
Blind Citizens Public Transport Association Group representative Carolyn Peat says onboard audio announcements will make a considerable difference for vision-impaired customers.
