A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has struck in the central Hawke's Bay district, felt by thousands.
The quake hit at 4:54pm on Saturday afternoon, 5km north of Waipukurau at a depth of 37km. It is being described by GeoNet as "moderate".
Within minutes, thousands of people had reported feeling it, with some as far away as Auckland. By 5:05pm, GeoNet said 5848 people had reported it.
"Omg! Massive jolt and shaking here in Marewa Napier. Gave me a heck of a fright," one person said on Twitter.
"Jeepers - that was a good shake in Napier," said another.
"Actually had a few bits fall off the shelf. I heard it coming but couldn't work out what it was!" added a third.
"And that will be quite enough of that thanks Mother Nature."
