Hillcrest High School in Hamilton has been closed as a precaution after it received a threatening message on Tuesday night.
The school announced its temporary closure to the community via a Facebook post on Wednesday morning, saying authorities had advised its staff to take the threat "seriously".
"It is with regret that we inform you that school will be closed today Wednesday the 15th of September due to a threat being received which the police have advised that we need to take seriously," it says.
"We apologise for the late notice but have been working with police to ascertain the best course of action and believe it is in the best interest of our staff and students’ safety to close the school.
"We will let you know by email and via Schoology when school will reopen."
A police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub a report had been received on Tuesday night that a "threatening message" had been found at the school.
"Police will be undertaking enquiries at the school today and the school has been closed as a precaution," the spokesperson said.
It is not clear what threats were made against the school. It is also unclear where the message was found or how it was delivered.
