Armed police rushed to Christchurch Hospital on Wednesday morning after a report of a person wielding a firearm - but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Police were called to the Christchurch outpatient building at about 10:30am and set up roadblocks nearby.

They attended as a precaution but later determined no firearm had been involved.

Police say one person has been taken into custody.

Dr Peter Bramley, the chief executive of Canterbury DHB, says the incident related to a patient.

He confirms it has now been resolved and the road blocks are no longer in place.

"Patients should attend their appointments on the Christchurch Hospital campus as planned, noting the current visitor restrictions in place under Delta alert level 2."
