A man is in custody after he allegedly started a fire inside a house in Auckland's Titirangi and threw things from the balcony.

Police were called to a property on Waima Crescent at around midnight following a report of a family harm incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marcia Murray said when police arrived, the occupants came out of the address except for one man, who said he had a firearm.

When it sounded like damage was being done inside the property, a cordon was set up around the address, Murray said.

Neighbouring properties were also evacuated by police as a precaution.

The man remained inside the house and was observed throwing items from the balcony.

The man then allegedly started a fire inside the house and jumped off the balcony where he was subsequently taken into custody.

The man received minor injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

He is expected to face charges and is expected to be appearing in court later today.

Enquiries are ongoing and a scene guard remains in place this morning.
