A Rotorua street is closed until further notice as geothermal activity causes steam, water and mud to seep through the road.
The Rotorua Lakes Council announced the closure of Hatupatu Dr behind the Rotorua Sportsdrome on Wednesday morning.
According to a statement from the council, the geothermal activity was due to a nearby bore causing steam and water to come up through the road.
A bore casing on the road failed several weeks ago, the Rotorua Daily Post reported, causing the steam, water and mud to force its way through.
Video posted by local radio station Te Arawa FM showed the bubbling water and mud seeping through the road.
The council said Hatupatu Dr is closed between Oruawhata and Queens Drs.
"Council staff and contractors continue to monitor and assess the situation," the statement said. "We will share more information as it comes to hand."
