A violent incident in the west Auckland suburb of Glen Eden has left a man in a critical condition as police swarm the area.
Details in a local community Facebook page report a rapidly unfolding situation on Hydra Place on Wednesday afternoon.
Photos taken by Newshub show the road cordoned off and multiple police cars and armed officers at the scene.
One person reports a machete attack while another reports hearing gunfire.
"We saw these big burly guys pick up this guy off the ground, carry him up the road covered in blood on his arms and legs, threw him in the back of the car and they took off," a local resident told the NZ Herald.
"We found out from the guy where it happened - right outside his house - that the guy had been slashed with a machete."
Police say after they attended the incident in Glen Eden a man turned up at Waitakere Hospital with multiple injuries. He was then transferred to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.
They've launched an investigation into how he was injured.
"Initial enquiries indicate that the male sustained his injuries during an altercation this afternoon involving multiple people on Virgo Place in Glen Eden," a police spokesperson says.
"A number of people were located subsequently by police and are believed to be linked - those people are assisting our enquiries. They are believed to be known to the victim.
"Enquiries are still in their early stages and we are not in a position to provide further details at this stage."
