Coronavirus: Record number of new cases, more than half of hospitalised COVID-positive patients unvaccinated

New Zealand is reporting 222 new COVID-19 cases today - a new record for the country - as well as one new death.

But beyond these numbers, here's what you may have missed from the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 update on Tuesday.

One death of hospitalised patient

There is one new COVID-19-related death - an Auckland City Hospital patient in their late-70s.

They were admitted to hospital on November 11 and later tested positive for the virus.

Locations of new cases

Out of Tuesday's 222 new cases, 197 are in Auckland, 20 in Waikato, two each in Wairarapa and Lakes, and one in Northland.

In Auckland, people showing any COVID-19 symptoms are urged to get tested. Testing sites at Northcote, Balmoral, Wiri, and Ōtara are operating at extended hours to increase access to testing.

There are 4416 people isolating at home around Auckland, including 2023 cases.

At Henderson's Edmonton Meadows Care Home, 21 residents and four staff members have tested positive since the start of the outbreak. Five of the residents who tested positive are receiving appropriate ward-level care at Auckland hospitals.

Of Waikato's 20 new cases, nine are in Ōtorohanga, seven in Hamilton, one in Te Awamutu, one in Te Kuiti, and two are awaiting confirmation.

Twelve of these cases were contacts already in isolation and a further two have been linked. Investigations into the remaining six are underway on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health says.

Three people are in Waikato Hospital receiving care, including two who were transferred from the community isolation facility on Monday night.

There are 338 people isolating at home in the region, including 92 cases and 246 contacts.

Of Lakes DHB's new cases, one is a Taupо̄ case announced on Monday and was officially added to Tuesday's numbers. The second case also lives in Taupо̄ and is a close contact of another case.

All cases in Taupо̄ are linked.

One of Wairarapa's two new cases was first announced on Monday but was formally added to Tuesday's numbers.

Both cases are based in Masterton and are currently in isolation. These cases were identified through targeted testing as part of a follow-up of a visit to Masterton by one of the Taupо̄ cases on the weekend of November 6 and 7.

Northland's single case has a residential address in the region, but they are currently in Auckland. This case is linked to another case in the same household.

One person remains in Whangārei Hospital in a stable condition.
