COVID-19: Person in police custody after jumping off ship near Gisborne and being hospitalised with hypothermia

A person from Myanmar is in police custody in Gisborne after jumping off a ship near Young Nick's Head on Tuesday night. 

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said the person was picked up at sea after jumping off the unnamed ship, which is anchored about 3km offshore near Young Nick's Head, a headland at the southern end of Poverty Bay/Tūranganui-a-Kiwa on the east coast of the North land.

The person was suffering from hypothermia and was admitted to hospital, the Ministry of Health said in its statement on Wednesday.

"They have been tested for COVID-19 and already returned a negative result and has now been discharged from hospital," the spokerson said.

As of Wednesday, the person is now in police custody in Gisborne.

One-hundred new community cases of COVID-19 have been reported on Wednesday, 97 of which are in Auckland and three are in Waikato. A little more than half of the new cases, 52, have been epidemiologically linked to existing infections - the rest have yet to be linked.
