A group of teenagers tried to abscond a youth justice facility in Rotorua on Saturday night.
The unsuccessful attempt to leave Rotorua's Te Maioha o Parekarangi Youth Justice Residence happened just before midnight and police had to be called.
Peter Whitcombe, Oranga Tamariki's general manager of youth justice services, says the "incident" involved a "group of young people" who "made an unsuccessful attempt to abscond".
"No young people or staff have been seriously injured," he says.
"Our initial assessment shows that systems that we have in place to keep young people and our staff safe were utilised successfully."
Whitcombe couldn't give any more details since an internal review is now underway.
The residence provides care for up to 30 people aged 12 to 17.
