Police have launched a homicide investigation after a person died in the west Auckland suburb of New Lynn on Friday.
Police swarmed a section of Great North Road around 10am after reports of gunshots.
Waitematā detective inspector Kevin McNaughton said when police arrived they found an injured person in the driveway of an address.
"Frontline police staff have tried to provide first aid to this person, however they have died at the scene," McNaughton said.
"Enquiries commenced around the area immediately after police arrived on scene, supported by the Air Support Unit.
"Police have also cleared neighbouring addresses. Our enquiries in the area remain ongoing at this stage."
McNaughton warned New Lynn residents to expect a heightened police presence today.
"A scene examination will be getting underway at the address in due course as well as a post mortem to follow at a later stage."
A large section of Great North Road is closed between Rata Street and Fruitvale Road.
