Cool and wet weather is set to stick around parts of New Zealand this weekend after a day of record rainfall in the Gisborne region.
"Central areas can expect showery days with the possibility of some heavy and thundery showers," MetService explains its latest news release.
"However, most won't see a thunderstorm, given the localised and isolated nature. But the risk still exists and is in the right place at the right time, a downpour or hail could change conditions quickly," meteorologist Tui McInnes said.
NIWA's observations show one month's worth of rain has already fallen in Gisborne on Thursday. Video supplied to Newshub shows the region's Taruheru River close to overflowing on Thursday morning.
"November is already the town's wettest month this year," NIWA said. "It's still raining, so take care out there."
MetService is forecasting more heavy rain for Gisborne as well as Hawke's Bay. Heavy rain warnings remain in place for both those regions.
"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly," the forecaster warned. "Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous."
Gisborne can expect heavy rain until at least 6pm on Thursday, while periods of heavy rain are expected in Gisborne until at least 11pm.
