A person has died in a truck crash on the South Island's Lewis Pass overnight, bringing this year's holiday road toll to five.
"The single vehicle crash, involving a truck and trailer, was reported to police just after 3:30am," a spokesperson said. "The sole occupant of the truck died at the scene.
"An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances."
Diversions remained in place in the area, the spokesperson said. The crash happened near Canterbury's St James Walkway.
Earlier, police confirmed a person died after being struck by a car in Auckland overnight.
Emergency services responded to the crash on Rosamund Ave, New Windsor just before 10pm.
The victim died at the scene.
"An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances," police said in a statement.
