Two people have died following incidents at Kāpiti's Waikanae Beach and Auckland's Karioitahi Beach on Boxing Day.

On Sunday afternoon, a police spokesperson confirmed a woman had died at Waikanae Beach following a water-related incident, which was reported to emergency services at around 1:30pm.

Situated just north of Paraparaumu in the Wellington region, Waikanae Beach is a popular holiday destination during the summer months.

"Police are making enquiries in relation to the death on behalf of the coroner," they said.

The spokesperson did not elaborate on the circumstances of the incident.

Later, a police spokesperson confirmed a man had died at Karioitahi Beach, a rugged coastline located south-west of Auckland near Waiuku.

The incident was reported to emergency services shortly after 2pm and enquiries into the circumstances of the death are ongoing, they said.

The incident in Kāpiti marks the fifth water-related death in the Wellington region this week.

On Christmas Eve, a man died in a diving-related death at Cape Palliser, a promontory on the Wairarapa coastline.

On Thursday, a 47-year-old man's body was recovered from Wellington Harbour on the capital's waterfront.

Also on Thursday, a man's body was retrieved from under the Days Bay wharf. As reported by Stuff, authorities were called to Days Bay at 10:45am and confirmed the Westpac Rescue helicopter, the dive squad and the police maritime unit had been searching for the missing man.

On Tuesday evening, the body of kayaker Jack Skellett, 23, was found in Wellington Harbour. He was formally identified by police on Thursday morning.
