Coronavirus: 196 Omicron cases detected at border since December, number of hospitalised patients drops

There were 28 new community cases reported on Wednesday, a slight rise following Tuesday's low numbers, and two new deaths.

Aside from the daily case numbers, you may have missed the details of the Ministry of Health's latest update.

Here's a breakdown of Wednesday's case numbers and data.

Deaths of two people with COVID-19

Two people infected with COVID-19 have recently died.

A man in his 30s, who died at home on January 5, was tested for COVID-19 post-death and returned a positive result. In addition, a man in his 60s died with COVID-19 at Middlemore Hospital on Sunday.

Locations of cases

Of Wednesday's 28 new cases, 17 are in Auckland, four each in Bay of Plenty and Lakes, and one each in Waikato, Christchurch, and south Canterbury,

Auckland

The exact location of Auckland's cases is not reported by the Ministry of Health.

There are 888 people isolating at home, including 185 cases.

Waikato

Waikato's new case is in Atiamuri and is being managed by Toi Te Ora Public Health.

Public health are supporting 29 cases to isolate at home.

Bay of Plenty

All of the Bay of Plenty's new cases are in Tauranga and all are close contacts of previously reported cases.

All cases are isolating at home or in managed accommodation.

Lakes

The four cases in Lakes are all based in Rotorua. One case is a close contact of a previously reported case and the other three are still being investigated for links to other infected people.

All cases are isolating at home or in managed accommodation.

Canterbury

There are a total of four community cases in Canterbury and one in south Canterbury, including two that were announced on Tuesday.

This total of five includes three new cases being announced on Wednesday. Two are close contacts of previously reported cases and one remains under investigation. Three of these five cases will be formally added to the Ministry of Health's case numbers on Thursday.

The ministry adds that more locations of interest around Christchurch are expected to be added.

Omicron update

A total of 196 Omicron cases have been detected at the border since December 1 and 11 cases of the Delta variant.

The Ministry of Health says there are 217 COVID-19 cases still undergoing whole genome sequencing, but they expect "the vast majority" will be the Omicron variant.
