Human remains have been found washed ashore at Leithfield Beach in north Canterbury's Hurunui District, police say.
Emergency services were notified of the remains by a member of the public just after 8:30am on Thursday.
"At this time, the remains are unidentified and the circumstances are unknown," a police statement said.
