A man has died in the sea south of Motunau Island, north of Christchurch, today.
The incident was reported to police about 4.18pm today.
Police said they were making further inquiries into the death and did not release any more information.
Motunau Island is a small reserve just off the coast of Pegasus Bay in the Hurunui District.
It is an important refuge for seabirds.
Elsewhere on the water in Canterbury, a person was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a jetski incident in Lyttleton Harbour about 5.15pm.
