Drivers in north Auckland were told to expect long delays after a fatal crash closed a large section of State Highway 1 for hours on Friday afternoon.
Police were in attendance at the two-vehicle crash, which occurred on a section of SH1 just south of Warkworth just after 1:30pm.
Traffic was backed up and an alternative route had been established.
One person was initially assessed to be in a critical condition, but police later confirmed they had died at the scene.
A St John spokesperson told Newshub it had treated four patients in total - two in a serious condition, one with moderate injuries and one minor - all of whom have been taken to Auckland City Hospital in an ambulance.
St John had earlier sent three ambulances, two managers and a helicopter to the scene.
Just before 7pm, the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said SH1 - which was closed from Grand Dr in Orewa to Woodcocks Rd in Warkworth - had reopened to motorists.
"Motorists are advised to delay their journey or use SH16 via Kaukapakapa as an alternate route," the agency had earlier said in a statement. "The road is likely to remain closed for some time today as a serious crash investigation takes place."
Police say the Serious Crash Unit has been notified and will be examining the scene.
"An investigation will be commenced into the circumstances of the crash. Police continue to advise motorists heading north and south to expect delays to their journeys this evening."
