Food prices in Aotearoa have seen the highest increase in a decade according to new figures from StatsNZ
StatsNZs annual food price evaluation shows the cost of food in supermarkets increased 4.5 percent in December 2021 year-on-year.
That increase is in part down to tomatoes. StatsNZ consumer prices manager Katrina Dewbery says tomatoes nearly doubled in price.
"The weighted average price of 1kg of tomatoes increased from $3.33 in December 2020 to $6.61 in December 2021."
StatsNZ says grocery foods had the biggest impact on the price rise, with its other main contributors being yoghurt, standard two-lite milk and fresh eggs.
Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 5.1 percent
"Households spend more on grocery food than on restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food," StatsNZ said.
