Strong and unusual currents are expected to continue across Aotearoa for a further 24 hours following the volcanic eruption in Tonga, Civil Defence warns.
Civil Defence said in a tweet troubled water would hit the east coast of the North and South Island and the south and west coasts of the South Island.
Civil Defence warned people of the risks when water conditions are strong.
"Strong currents can injure and drown people. Take care and remain vigilant if you are in or near the water close to the shore."
Civil Defence tweeted on Monday rough water conditions would likely continue until the volcanic activity in Tonga ends.
Continued troubled water conditions come after tsunami warnings were triggered for several South Pacific islands including New Zealand following the underwater volcanic eruption off Tonga on Sunday.
