Police have confirmed two people have died following separate crashes on Sunday.
It pushes the holiday road death toll to 14 so far. That period covers between the afternoon of Christmas Eve and the morning of January 5.
One person died following a single vehicle crash on Matawai Rd, Waerengaahika, near Gisborne. The incident was reported to emergency services just after 4:40pm on Sunday, with police confirming the death at 6:40am on Monday morning.
"Police offer their sympathies to the whānau and friends of the deceased," a spokesperson says. "Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."
Another death was reported on Monday morning following a serious crash on Waihi Rd, Judea, close to Tauranga. Police say the incident involved a car and a pedestrian at 9:40pm on Sunday, with the pedestrian dying as a result of the crash.
Meanwhile, Arapuni Rd, Waipa re-opened late on Sunday night after a fatal crash there.
"As part of ongoing enquiries Police would like to speak to witnesses of the crash.
"Specifically, Police would like to hear from the driver and passenger of a white car that was in front of the vehicle that crashed.
"While they were not involved, it is thought they may have information that would assist with the ongoing enquiries to understand the circumstances of the crash.
"The driver and passenger in the white car, and anyone else who witnessed the crash who hasn’t already spoken to Police, are asked to call 105 and quote event number P049172862."
