High pressure over New Zealand this weekend is sending temperatures soaring.
WeatherWatch says Southland and inland Otago will be in the mid to late 20s on Saturday, with some places over 30C.
And MetService says temperatures will continue to climb on Sunday as the heat travels up the country.
"Most urban centres in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay will break 30C tomorrow, alongside Blenheim," MetService says.
But at the same time as the heat hits the North Island, the lower South Island will see some rain.
"A series of fronts move onto the lower South Island during Sunday, bringing rain or showers to western and southern areas, with the possibility of heavy falls for some," MetService says.
"In addition, northwesterly winds will be strong for Rakiura/Stewart Island tomorrow morning, and in Wellington for much of the day."
Next week, a new high-pressure zone moves back into the New Zealand area from the Southern Ocean/Tasmania area.
"Much like the past few days it brings a light southerly change that sees temperatures drop, even though no other major weather changes," WeatherWatch says in a release.
"Next week Dunedin has a number of days with highs between +14C and 17C, so too does Invercargill and other coastal areas of Southland and Otago.
"By late next week it's expected that Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa may see 10C shaven off their daytime highs, going from the mid to late 20s for the start of the week, down to highs in the late teens by Thursday."
