A crash on State Highway 1 has now been cleared, but travellers have been told to expect delays as congestion eases.
The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said the highway was blocked from both directions.
Police say they were called to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Karapiro Road and SH1 (Tirau Road) at around 4:50 pm on Tuesday.
They said emergency services were attending the scene and initial indications are that one person has serious injuries.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area or expect delays.
