Weather: Why the North Island is particularly humid at the moment

It's beyond hot in New Zealand, but it's not the temperature bothering North Islanders - it's that heavy, muggy air hanging over them.

NIWA says humidity levels have been consistently higher than usual and the sticky weather is going to stick around for a bit longer.

The humidity is brow-moistening, hair-frazzling, and sleep-ruining. Even though it might feel like you're in Fiji, unfortunately you're not - we just have the consistently muggy weather to match it.

"In Auckland today is the ninth day where the dew point temperature - it's a measure of humidity - has been above 20C this summer," says NIWA forecaster Nava Fedaeff.

"Last year that only happened on three days of summer, and the year before four days, so it is quite unusual."

NIWA says at the end of last week we had two atmospheric rivers that travelled from the north, bringing heavy rain to the West Coast.

"Now the rain is pretty much gone but the air is still hanging around weather events coming from the tropics and they're just dragging all of that moist air with them," Fedaeff says.

And all that damp air isn't just affecting humans, but our plant life might be looking a little unusual too.

"It's just the moisture in the air, all the mushrooms having their little babies, they travel with moisture, and I noticed my finger lime is flowering, three four, five months out of season," says Amy Clark, Kings Plant Barn assistant manager.

So keep an eye on your plants - but what can you do for yourself?

If you don't have the luxury of air conditioning at home or in the office, then you probably need to be at the beach, or there's always blasting the air conditioner in your car. But with petrol prices right now, the cheapest and tastiest option is getting an ice cream.

"Unfortunately it will continue through the weekend, next week is looking a lot more dry," Fedaeff says.

So hang in there - and try not to sweat it.
