There have been multiple fires lit, the sound of explosions and violent clashes between police and protesters in the grounds of Parliament this afternoon.
Clouds of black smoke were seen rising above Parliament's lawn and some protesters feared that tents that had been set on fire could cause gas bottles to explode.
RNZ reporters on the scene reported seeing several fires being lit and hearing the sound of explosions.
Police moved in and have made dozens of arrests so far today.
They said in a statement they were clearing away structures such as tents and toilets and also towed away 30 vehicles.
These are some of the images RNZ staff have captured of this afternoon's action.
