The Armed Offender Squad rushed to New Brighton Pier in Christchurch on Friday afternoon following reports of a clash between two armed groups.
Police told Newshub they responded to a disorder incident near the pier at around 2:10 pm on Friday involving two groups of people.
A spokesperson said reports suggested the groups may have been armed, but it is unclear whether anyone has been injured.
All parties had since left the area.
The spokesperson said police are working to locate those involved, and the Armed Offenders Squad attended as a precaution.
