Police have confirmed a person has drowned at Whangamatā Beach, located north of Tauranga.
Police said in a statement they were called to the scene along with St John at around 4:45 pm on Friday after receiving reports a person was in trouble in the water.
The person was brought from the water by another person and received CPR, but unfortunately, they were not able to be revived.
Police said they will make inquiries into their death on behalf of the Coroner.
