Anzac weekend road toll at nine after two overnight crashes in North Island

Nine people have now died on New Zealand roads this Anzac weekend after two crashes in the North Island overnight.

It comes after four teenagers were killed in a crash in Invercargill on Friday.

Overnight, a motorist died after crashing in Herekino near Kaitaia.

Police said the crash, which involved one vehicle, happened on Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd just before 1am on Sunday.

The motorist died at the scene, bringing the Anzac weekend road toll to nine. Three people were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Police said on Sunday morning the road was closed but has since reopened.

Meanwhile, another person died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash near Raglan late on Saturday night.

A few hours earlier, a motorcyclist died after crashing in Whakatāne.

In earlier fatal crashes, a person died on State Highway 57 in Levin and another in Whangārei. Both of those crashes happened on Saturday morning.

The Anzac weekend road toll has more than doubled this year's Easter weekend road toll of four.
