Coronavirus: Latest on COVID-19 Omicron outbreak - Tuesday, April 26

There are 6380 new COVID-19 cases in New Zealand on Tuesday and the Ministry of Health has reported another four deaths.

The latest deaths, two in their 70s and two in their 90s, included people who died in the past two days. Two of them were from Canterbury and the other two Taranaki.

It comes after 5690 infections were reported on Monday.

Tuesday's new cases bring the seven-day rolling average to 8085 - up from 7585 a week ago.

1:04pm - Below are more details on the latest COVID-19 deaths:

Today we are sadly reporting the deaths of four people with COVID-19. The deaths being reported today include people who have died over the previous two days.

These deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths with COVID-19 to 687 and the 7-day rolling average of reported deaths is 12.

Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today, two people were from Taranaki and two were from Canterbury.

Two were in their 70s and two were over 90. Two were women and two were men.

Out of respect, we will be making no further comment. 

1:02pm - The seven-day rolling average for COVID-19 cases is up on last week, the ministry says.

"Today's seven-day rolling average of case numbers is 8085 - last Tuesday it was 7585. Although this is an increase from last week, the number of reported community cases is expected to continue to fluctuate day to day and the overall trend remains a reduction in reported cases."
