Two hectares of vegetation is engulfed in flame in east Auckland - and firefighters say it's "spreading at speed".

The blaze, on a property on Papakura-Clevedon Road, is sending plumes of thick smoke into the air.

A Newshub camera operator who is at the scene says the flames are as high as a two-storey building.

Fire and Emergency were called to the scene at about 4pm on Friday. They sent four crews from across the Auckland region, with two helicopters also on their way.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub the two hectares of vegetation are spreading at speed in difficult terrain.

The spokesperson says roughly 20 firefighters are battling the enraged flames.
