Multiple people have died after a car and a heavy vehicle collided in Invercargill, police have confirmed.
Detective Inspector Stuart Harvey told Newshub the crash occurred near Queens Park on Friday afternoon.
"Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash, involving a heavy motor vehicle and a motor vehicle, on Queens Drive just before 4pm," he said.
"Sadly, multiple people died at the scene."
Police did not provide any further detail on how many fatalities there were.
The road between St Andrew St and King St will be closed overnight, and the Serious Crash Unit has been advised of the incident.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who witnessed the crash. Those that can help with enquiries are encouraged to contact police on 105, quoting event number P050332364.
