One person is dead following a crash at the speedway track in Palmerston North on Sunday evening.
A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the track at around 6:15pm. A livestream shows what looks like a fire truck arriving at the speedway.
The livestream of the race doesn't show the moment of the crash but commentators can be heard reacting as it happened.
"Stu it went really wrong because he ended up turning himself hard into that wall down there," one said. "Oh, it's brutal."
One witness described the crash to Stuff as a "seriously big hit".
"[He] came down the straight hard, hit the other car, went sideways, flicked back and went head-on straight into the wall," they explained.
Another said the crash happened after the driver crashed into the back of another car.
"[He] tried pushing it into the wall, but he's gone head-on into the wall."
The incident happened at the Superstock Teams Champs event being held this weekend. Racing for the rest of Sunday evening and Monday has been cancelled.
"As per the announcement over the public address system, we were advised not to continue tonight's meeting," the speedway organisers announced online.
Promoter Bruce Robertson told Stuff Speedway NZ has impounded the car and would conduct an investigation.
"We are advising people to hold their tickets and the relevant information will be available in due course."
A police spokesperson said WorkSafe has been notified of the incident and police will be investigating on behalf of the Coroner.
