Police have released new information revealing the events leading up to the fatal shooting of Kaoss Price.
Assistant police commissioner Sandra Venables said in a statement an investigation team has come from outside of Taranaki to assist.
"The scene of the incident stretched about 230 metres along SH3 and exhibits requiring forensic examination included 15 vehicles and one trailer."
Venables said the examination of those vehicles was completed on Wednesday.
She said witness interviews are still ongoing due to the "significant number" of them.
"Enquiries to date have established that about 9:30 pm on Saturday 16 April, a police unit conducted a vehicle stop on a car travelling along SH3."
Venables said while police were speaking to the driver of the vehicle, Price sped past in his vehicle with his headlights off.
Price then turned around and drove at high speed towards police, before crossing the centre line and "narrowly missing" the stationary police car.
Venables said Price continued down the road before making a second U-turn and driving back towards police.
"This time ramming the police car at speed."
Police said the force of the impact pushed the police car off the road.
"Mr Price's vehicle was immobilised due to the damage sustained in this collision."
Following the collision, Venables said Price left his vehicle and attempted to take possession of a number of vehicles from members of the public who had stopped due to the incident.
"He was shot while attempting to take control of one of these vehicles."
Venables said police immediately began first aid, but ambulance staff pronounced him dead at the scene.
"Members of the pubic caught up in the incident were not injured."
Venables has revealed Price was not armed during the incident and police did not recover any firearms from the scene.
Price's body was returned to his family yesterday following a post-mortem.
Venables added police would like to speak to anyone with information or footage.
