Thousands raised for families of teenagers killed in crash near Invercargill

Thousands of dollars has been raised to support the families of two of the teenagers who were killed in a crash near Invercargill on Friday. 

Konnor Steele, Indaka Rouse, Kyah Kennedy - all 16 years old  - and Omaruhuatau Tawhai,17, were killed when two vehicles collided on Queen's Dr, just before 4pm on Friday.

A Givealittle page has been launched by a family friend to help support Rouse's mother after his death. 

"As many are aware, our dear friend Aleisha lost her precious son Indaka Rouse in an accident with his mates on Friday April 22nd," the page reads. "Indaka was a much loved son, brother, friend and family member to all who loved him. As his mum and his family grieve for the loss of their son, we would like to be able to raise some funds in order to ease some financial strain so that his mumma can take some time to be with his brothers and sisters and grieve. 

"Please feel free to leave a donation for Aleisha at this time to help her and her family deal with their tremendous loss."

The page has raised more than $9000 at the time of writing. 

A separate page has also been set up to support Tawhai's family. The page has raised more than $4000 which will go towards his tangihanga.

"As known by many now the community has been struck with unforeseen grief in a fatal car accident in Invercargill. Among those effected was the beautiful Omaruhuatau Tawhai. ‘Maru’," the page reads. 

"In an instant his whanau world was changed. Their hearts broken. Amanda and Teira losing their baby. Not something any parent should ever have to experience. Jai, Tamara & Awhi losing their baby brother. Fairlayne losing her partner. The whanau losing a moko, nephew, cousin and friend. The community losing a handsome young man."

The Givealittle page described Maru as a "beautiful, talented, caring and cheeky man" who has been "stolen". 

"Those who know and love Maru will be deeply saddened and I would like to put this page out to whanau & friends wide and far who want to tautoko this whanau in their grief by supporting with financial burden of what has already been a terrible tragedy.

"Any tautoko will be appreciated by the whanau and all contributions will go to the whanau in supporting with Maru’s tangihanga."

Their deaths have shaken the Invercargill and Bluff communities with tributes and photos of the teens being shared widely online. 

Police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing. The teens died after the Ford Ranger they were driving hit a truck. The truck driver escaped with minor injuries.
