Weather warnings and watches are in place around the country as many Kiwis are set to experience a wet start to the week.
MetService has issued rain warnings and watches for the top and east of the North Island and the West Coast of the South Island.
The forecaster said the Coromandel Peninsula has an orange heavy rain warning from 8pm on Monday to 3pm on Tuesday which could see up to 120mm of rain.
"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous," MetService said.
There was also an orange heavy rain warning in place for Northland from 8pm on Monday until 3am on Tuesday. Northland also has a severe thunderstorm watch in place from 9pm on Monday to 10am on Tuesday.
"Severe thunderstorms can bring localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm per hour," MetService said.
"Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips."
MetService said driving conditions in the area will be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility.
The forecaster said if the severe weather hits or if residents felt threatened, they should take shelter immediately.
MetService has also issued a heavy rain watch from 8pm on Monday to 1pm on Tuesday for Eastern parts of Auckland north of Orewa and Great Barrier Island.
The forecaster said the area could see periods of rain with localised downpours and thunderstorms possible.
A heavy rain watch is in place for Bay Of Plenty west of Tauranga from 8pm on Monday to 7pm on Tuesday with the chance of heavy falls and thunderstorms with rainfall approaching warning criteria.
The South Island isn't escaping the bad weather with a heavy rain watch in place for Fiordland, Westland south of Otira and the headwaters of the Canterbury and Otago lakes and rivers from 11am on Wednesday to 11pm on Thursday.
MetService said the region could see periods of heavy rain with the rain watch likely to be upgraded to a warning.
The next update of the weather warnings and watches is at 10am on Tuesday, MetService said.
