An Auckland boat charter company has been charged after a woman fell overboard and died during a work party last year.

Maritime New Zealand told Newshub Zefiro Charters LTD has been charged after Danielle Tamarua, 25, died on April 1, 2021.

Tamarua died of critical injuries after she fell overboard a Zefiro Charters boat in the Waitematā Harbour. She was with fellow staff from LittleWolf Catering, which she had recently joined as a part-time chef.

Maritime NZ has laid charges against Zefiro Charters Ltd and its skipper, who are set to appear in the Auckland District Court.

Zefiro Charters is facing two charges. One under the Health and Safety at Work Act in relation to exposing a person or persons to risk of death or serious injury and another charge under the Maritime Transport Act 1994 in relation to operating a ship without the prescribed number of qualified personnel.

The boat's skipper also faces two charges under the Maritime Transport Act.

Maritime NZ said it cannot comment further as the matter is currently before the courts.

Tamarua's family described her as "beautiful, kind and gentle" after her death.

"Danielle's passing is a huge loss to her young family and we know the Auckland hospitality community will want to join us in supporting them in these most difficult times."
