Coronavirus: Latest on COVID-19 community outbreak - Monday, May 30

COVID-19 cases have increased in New Zealand with 5836 new infections the Ministry of Health revealed.

The health ministry said five people died with COVID-19 on Monday taking the death toll to 1154.

There are currently 403 people in hospital - up from 383 on Sunday - and ten in ICU.

The seven-day rolling average of community case numbers has decreased to 6881 - last Monday, it was 7712.

  • New Zealand recorded 5836new community cases of COVID-19 on Monday.
  • Ten additional deaths of people with COVID-19 were reported.
  • There are 403 people in hospital, ten of whom are in ICU.
  • First case of Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 was detected on Wednesday in a community case, without a clear link to the border, in Hawke’s Bay from a test result returned on May 10.
  • Omicron BA.4 and/or BA.5 sub variants detected in wastewater samples at Rosedale on Auckland's North Shore and in Gisborne on Wednesday.

  • Vaccines administered to date: 4,027,483 first doses; 3,979,473 second doses; 32,406 third primary doses; 2,657,080 booster doses: 262,932 paediatric first doses and 124,169 paediatric second doses 
  • Vaccines administered yesterday: 9 first doses; 14 second doses; 0 third primary doses; 339 booster doses; 16 paediatric first doses and 123 paediatric second doses

1:04pm - The Ministry of Health has provided an update on the COVID-19 related deaths:

Today we are reporting 5,836 new community cases, 403 current hospitalisations, and five deaths in the past three days.

The seven-day rolling average of community case numbers today is 6,881 – last Monday, it was 7,712.

COVID-19 deaths

Today we are sadly reporting the deaths of five people with COVID-19.

These deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths with COVID-19 to 1,154 and the seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 13. 

Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today; two were from the Auckland region, one was from Taranaki, one from Canterbury, and one was the Southern region.

One person was in their 70s, three were in their 80s and one was over 90.

Of these people, three were male and two were female.

This is a very sad time for whānau and friends and our thoughts and condolences are with them.

Out of respect, we will be making no further comment on these deaths.

There are 52 new COVID cases recorded at the border in Managed Isolation and Quarantine.

12:50pm - Two members of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's United States delegation have tested positive for COVID-19. 

Just as Ardern flies back to Washington DC for her White House meetings, two of her closest advisors have tested positive for COVID-19.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chris Seed, and Ardern's chief press secretary, Andrew Campbell, have tested positive for COVID-19.
