COVID-19 cases have jumped to 9392 on Thursday with 398 people in hospital, the Ministry of Health revealed.
Another nine COVID-19 deaths were reported, which included eight people who died over the previous two days and one since May 5.

1:08pm - The ministry has provided an update on the Omicron outbreak:
Today we are reporting 9,392 community cases, 398 hospitalisations and 9 deaths.
Today’s seven-day rolling average of community case numbers is 7,533 – last Thursday it was 7,684.
The number of community cases today is an important reminder to remain vigilant. There are three actions everyone can do to help protect themselves and others from COVID-19.
Firstly – be up to date with vaccinations, including a booster if you’ve not yet had one.
Secondly – wear a mask. Masks are still required in many indoor settings. A good rule of thumb is to wear a mask in indoor public settings as we know that mask use halves the risk of spread of COVID-19.
And thirdly – stay home and avoid others if you’re unwell, isolating or waiting for the results of a COVID-19 test.

Today we are sadly reporting the deaths of 9 people with COVID-19. The deaths being reported today include 8 people who have died over the past two days and one person who has died since 5 May.
These deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths with COVID-19 to 911 and the 7-day rolling average of reported deaths is 13.
Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today; four were from Auckland; and five were from Canterbury.
One person was their 70s; two in their 80s and six were aged over 90.
Of these people, four were women and five were men.
This is a very sad time for whānau and friends and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this time.

There are 84 new COVID cases recorded at the border in Managed Isolation and Quarantine.

12:45pm - China hit back against what it called "irresponsible" comments by the head of the World Health Organization, who described the country's uncompromising and increasingly painful "zero COVID" policy as "not sustainable."
The policy has placed hundreds of millions of people across dozens of cities under various degrees of movement restrictions, most dramatically in Shanghai, causing significant economic damage in China and beyond and fuelling wide-spread frustration.
Officials in Shanghai, now in its sixth week under a sweeping lockdown, said on Wednesday half the city had achieved "zero COVID" status, but restrictions would remain in place.
China's uncompromising approach stands in contrast to most other parts of the world, where governments have chosen to live with the virus.
