The family of the Mt Albert homicide victim have released a heartbreaking statement in an effort to gain more information for the police investigation.
On Tuesday 25-year-old Thomas Coombes was found dead in Roy Clements Treeways, Mount Albert. Police believe a knife was used in a "brutal attack" which left Coombes with multiple injuries.
On Thursday police launched a homicide investigation and on Saturday his alleged killer was caught. The man has been charged with murder and will appear in Auckland District Court on Monday.
In a statement on Sunday, Coombes' family said he was living a "happy and beautiful life" when his life was "taken from him".
"He was walking home from uni where he was studying photography - following his passion after becoming a qualified builder," they said.
"He was a keen sportsman, with a genuine interest in and love for his family and many friends.
"His life was taken from him, and from all of us who love him, in a cruel act of violence."
Police ask anyone with information or relevant detail that may assist them with their investigation to call 105, quoting file number 220524/8192, or Operation Volans. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
And Coombes' family finished with a plea for the public to help.
"If releasing this statement can help to track his movements on Tuesday evening, or in any other way, please pass any information to the police," they said.
