Wind and rain are set to hammer the West Coast of the South Island over the next 48 hours, with warnings and watches in place.
MetService said a front is moving north over the South Island on Sunday and early Monday, which will bring heavy rain and strong northwesterlies to the West Coast.
Here are all the warnings and watches in place issued by MetService.
Buller
A heavy rain watch is in place for Buller and Westland from Otira northwards from 9pm on Sunday to 8am on Monday.
MetService said a period of heavy rain could approach short-duration warning criteria, especially in the ranges, but the heavy rain should ease in northern Westland by 3am on Monday.
Canterbury High Country
A strong wind watch is in place for the Canterbury High Country from 9am to 4pm on Sunday, with MetService warning northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
Otira
A heavy rain warning is in place for Westland south of Otira from 9am on Sunday to midnight.
This area is expected to bear the brunt of the rain with up 250mm possible in the ranges, with 100mm near the coast south of Ross.
MetService said rainfall intensities could be up to 35mm per hour in the ranges, with the rain easing south of Bruce Bay late afternoon or early evening on Sunday.
The forecaster warned heavy rain could cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. There could also be surface flooding and slips with driving conditions potentially hazardous.
Arthur's Pass
A heavy rain warning is in place for the Canterbury headwaters and south of Arthur's Pass from 9am on Sunday through to midnight.
MetService warned the area could expect up to 230mm of rain about the main divide, with up to 130mm within 15km east of the divide.
The rainfall intensities could be up to 30mm per hour, especially on Sunday afternoon, with the heavy rain potentially causing streams and rivers to rise rapidly. The rain could cause surface flooding and slips while driving conditions may be hazardous, MetService said.
Otago headwaters
A heavy rain watch is in place from 9am to 3pm on Sunday for the Otago headwaters.
MetService said a period of heavy rain is expected on Sunday, with rainfall accumulations potentially approaching warning criteria.
Te Anau
A heavy rain warning was in place from 9am to 11am on Sunday for the Fiordland area north of Doubtful Sound.
MetService said the area should expect a further 20 to 40mm of rain to accumulate on top of what has fallen, with peak rates up to 20mm per hour.
There are no warnings or watches in place for the North Island, with most places expected to have a fine Sunday.
But MetService warned most of the North Island could see rain on Monday with potential thunderstorms for Waikato through to Taranaki.
